Merlin Housing Society is the largest provider of social housing across the South Gloucestershire region. They manage around 8,000 homes and employ over 200 staff.
After having had positive experiences of using DotNetNuke for their CMS website, Merlin wanted to update their existing DNN intranet/extranet by re-designing it, creating a valuable resource for all their staff.
Merlin specified that they would like a completely different look to their internal network from their website as it was for a different user group. The first task was to create a new logo for the intranet/extranet, which was named ‘The Portal’.
The design of the intranet/extranet had to be eye-catching, easy to use and quick to update. It also had to hold a large volume of information which registered users would be changing on a regular basis.
A wide range of functionality was included within ‘The Portal’ including latest news, upcoming events, discussion forums, photo galleries, video galleries and job listings. All these modules were customised and styled to fit in with the design of the site, enabling registered users to upload content.
Social networking was also implemented into the intranet/extranet using the module Active Social. This meant that staff members could chat, message and email other registered users. It has proved to be a popular addition to the site.
All company documents can be accessed via ‘The Portal’ and an advanced search was added to help users locate the right information quickly and easily.
Pure Systems also built a custom module for DNN which enabled users to search for digitised maps of Merlin properties using street names. This has been a success as it has enabled all the data to be easily accessible and held in a central location.
